Oklahoma Marks National FYL Prevention and Awareness Day
Thursday, August 21, will be recognized across Oklahoma and the nation as National FYL Prevention and Awareness Day, a time dedicated to highlighting the devastating impact this powerful synthetic opioid continues to have on communities nationwide.
Health experts warn that FYL is so potent that even a dose as small as five to seven grains of salt can be fatal.
According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), “August 21st is a coordinated day of action led by grassroots FYL awareness organizations and families who have lost loved ones. The goal is to educate the public about the dangers of illicit FYL and prevent more lives from being lost.”
The day emphasizes community empowerment through education and prevention, a critical effort given that every five minutes, someone in the U.S. dies from FYL poisoning.
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has called FYL the leading cause of death among Americans ages 18 to 45, surpassing car accidents, suicides, and other health crises.
"One Pill Can Kill" Campaign
As part of this awareness effort, the One Pill Can Kill campaign continues to raise public understanding about counterfeit pills laced with FYL. Warning signs of FYL poisoning include:
-
Gray, blue, or pale skin
-
Constricted pupils
-
Limp or weak limbs
-
Unresponsiveness
Recognizing these symptoms quickly can be lifesaving.
Expanding Access to Naloxone
Oklahoma has taken proactive steps to ensure rapid response in emergencies. At least 100 Naloxone vending machines have been installed across the state, and the medication can also be purchased online. Naloxone is a fast-acting treatment that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose when administered promptly.
Remembering Lives Lost
On Thursday evening, families and advocates will gather outside the Oklahoma State Capitol for a candlelight vigil. This annual tradition honors the lives lost to FYL and gives loved ones a chance to share their stories, transforming grief into a call for awareness and action.
It’s worth noting that National FYL Awareness Day was also observed earlier this year on April 29, 2025. By dedicating multiple days to this cause, organizers hope to keep attention focused on the urgent need to save lives and strengthen prevention efforts.
