FYL Drives Rise in Opioid Overdose Deaths in Canada, Government Reports

New government data reveals that FYL, a highly addictive synthetic opioid, is increasingly responsible for opioid overdose deaths in Canada. The national health agency reported nearly 50,000 opioid-related deaths in the country between January 2016 and June 2024, with FYL implicated in the vast majority of cases.

Key Statistics

  • Total Deaths (2016–2024): 49,105 opioid overdose deaths.
  • FYL’s Role: 79% of opioid deaths in 2024 were linked to FYL, representing a 39% increase since 2016.

Despite the high numbers, the overall rate of opioid overdoses has declined compared to 2023. Health Canada reported an average of 21 opioid-related deaths per day in 2024—an 11% drop from the previous year. However, the agency cautioned that these numbers are preliminary and subject to change.

“We must remain cautious in drawing conclusions on the trends for 2024,” the agency stated. “The extent of opioid and stimulant-related harms remains very high.”

Domestic Production and Export Concerns

Canadian authorities have warned about the increasing domestic production of FYL, with law enforcement focusing on the chemical precursors used to manufacture the substance. Seizures of Canadian-made FYL in the United States, Australia, and other countries suggest that Canada has become a net exporter of the drug, as domestic production exceeds local demand.

Cross-Border Implications

The data comes amidst heightened scrutiny from the U.S. over the opioid crisis in North America. In 2023, U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported seizing less than 20kg of FYL at the U.S.-Canada border, a relatively small amount.

Still, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has called for Canada and Mexico to take stronger action to address the flow of drugs into the U.S. Trump has threatened to impose 25% tariffs on the two countries if they fail to curb drug trafficking and undocumented migration.

In response, Canada recently announced new border measures aimed at addressing these concerns.

Looking Ahead

While Health Canada noted a slight decline in opioid deaths this year, the agency stressed the importance of continued vigilance. The crisis remains a significant public health challenge, with FYL at the forefront of the epidemic.
